At LuxTails, we don't just breed Yorkies — we love preserving the Yorkshire Terrier.

We fell in love with that classic little dog — that sound, confident, happy companion with the silky steel-blue and tan coat and that big terrier spirit in a tiny, square little body. Our goal is simply to keep that beautiful Yorkie exactly that.

WHY THE STANDARD MATTERS SO MUCH

The breed standard isn't about being fancy. It describes what makes a Yorkie a Yorkie —

When Yorkies are bred without that blueprint in mind, that look and feel slowly fades. It's called genetic drift. As puppies they all look adorable and alike, but as adults they can become unrecognizable. Still purebred on paper, but not really Yorkie in type or spirit — and yet families often pay the same price for either puppy.

Yes, every puppy deserves a loving home and every puppy is adorable — but a puppy that is not bred to standard and is poorly bred should not cost the same to the puppy buyer as one from a preservation program and yet they do on average.

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION

When we breed for the standard, we are breeding for health, too.

• The Coat: That silky coat can turn thick, woolly, or cottony and lose its rich color.

• The Build: That neat, square little body can become long, lanky, and oversized.

• The Health: Important health screenings for knees, trachea, and eyes can get skipped.

Purposeful breeding helps keep them sound and healthy from the inside out.

PUREBRED VS. WELL-BRED

Here's something many families don't know — CKC registration only means the paperwork was filed. CKC doesn't come out to check DNA, health, or if the dogs actually look like Yorkies.

So a dog can be 100% purebred on paper, but not well-bred. And purebred does not automatically mean well-bred.

HOW TO SPOT A PRESERVATION BREEDER

Whether your puppy comes from us or another wonderful breeder, here’s a kind tip:

A preservation breeder shows their dogs in conformation, where a judge awards points for how well they match the standard. It’s unbiased proof that they’re truly good examples of the breed — not just paperwork.

CKC registration alone is just paperwork and doesn’t guarantee ethics, and an old title from eons ago doesn’t tell you about the puppies today.

We always cheer for families who choose a preservation breeder who health tests and raises puppies with love — whether that’s LuxTails or another wonderful breeder.

We breed only for the traditional CKC standard color and coat — and for true Yorkshire Terrier type. We don't just breed whatever two dogs happen to live in our home, for profit, or for that "rare exotic color" price tag or extra tiny size. That is marketing hype for a fault. In a true Yorkshire Terrier, those traits are a departure from the standard — often a sign of mixed ancestry or a dilution gene that can come with coat and skin issues — and major heatlh issues not something to be celebrated or charged more for it should be a cheaper dog than a well bred dog. We breed with purpose to preserve the Yorkshire terrier.

HOW OUR PUPPY PROGRAM WORKS

1. Join Our Little Waitlist
Just reach out on our website! We keep our waitlist small so we can really get to know you and make the perfect match. A small deposit holds your spot — it's non-refundable but you can move it to any future litter if timing isn't right.

2. When Puppies Arrive
We contact our waitlist families in order. Around 4-5 weeks when their little personalities start to shine, we help match you with your perfect puppy based on your family and lifestyle.

3. Going Home
Our babies stay with us until 10-12 weeks so they are confident, well-socialized, and have a great start with crate and potty training. That extra time with mom and siblings makes such a difference!

YOUR PEACE OF MIND

Every LuxTails puppy is CKC registered, vet-checked as healthy at 8 weeks, microchipped, and comes with our one-year genetic health guarantee.

They go home fully prepped — first vaccines, dewormed, freshly groomed — and with a puppy pack full of goodies: starter food, blanket with mom's scent, a toy, and more.

To keep our home and our little ones safe from germs, we don't do in-home visits, but we LOVE video calls! You'll get weekly pictures and videos of your baby until they're in your arms.

We would love for you to pick up here in Lethbridge County, AB — that first cuddle is so special! We offer free delivery to Calgary, and can arrange a trusted puppy nanny for a reasonable drive or air travel within Canada. We never ship a puppy in cargo — your baby will always have a companion.
