The First Few Days home with your new Puppy

Bringing home a new puppy is so exciting, emotional, and sometimes a little overwhelming—for both you and your puppy.

While you've likely been counting down the days until pickup, your puppy has just left everything they have ever known. New sights, sounds, smells, and a new family can be a lot to take in all at once.

The good news? With a little patience, consistency, and lots of love, most puppies settle in very quickly.

Before Your Puppy Comes Home

A little preparation goes a long way. We recommend having the following supplies ready before pickup day:

LuxTails Yorkshire Terrier Puppies: Meet and Greet with new owners.

  • Quality puppy food (You will go home with a bag of food that your puppy has been eating)

  • Food and water bowls

  • A crate or puppy pen

  • A comfortable bed that is easy to wash

  • Soft blankets

  • Puppy-safe toys

  • Harness (collars are highly discouraged for the yorkie breed due to their soft tracheas)

  • Enzyme cleaner for accidents

  • Puppy treats for training and rewards (we use their food until they are older)

  • Grooming supplies, including a brush and comb (brush should have no nibs)

  • Pee pads (washable cloth or paper)

Having everything set up ahead of time helps make your puppy's transition smoother and less stressful.

Give Them Time to Adjust

Your puppy may be confident and adventurous right away, Cry when left alone (scared), or they may be a little quieter during the first few days. Both are completely normal.

Remember, they have just left their mother, comfort of their littermates, and the home where they were raised. Allow them time to explore at their own pace and avoid overwhelming them with too many visitors or activities right away.

Keep Things Calm and Simple

The first few days are not the time for big outings or introducing your puppy to everyone you know in fact they will not be considered fully vacinated so you should limit interaction with other pets that they will not be living with. Instead, focus on helping your puppy learn their new routine. Show them where they will sleep, where they eat, and where they go outside for potty breaks.

Puppies Love Routine and a predictable routine helps puppies feel safe and secure.

Schedule a Veterinary Visit

We recommend scheduling a wellness check with your veterinarian upon bringing your puppy home.

Your puppy will already have received their first set of vaccinations before leaving us, but they are still too young to complete the remainder of their puppy vaccine series. Your veterinarian can help you schedule the remaining vaccinations and discuss a preventative healthcare plan that is right for your puppy.

Many families also appreciate the peace of mind that comes with having their veterinarian perform an initial health check after bringing their new puppy home.

Potty Training Starts Immediately

Take your puppy outside frequently, especially:

  • After waking up

  • After eating or drinking

  • After playtime

  • Before bedtime

Celebrate successes with lots of praise. Young puppies are still learning what is expected of them, and accidents are simply part of the process.

If an accident happens, try not to get frustrated with your puppy. They are not being stubborn or trying to be naughty—they simply don't know the rules yet.

The truth is that most accidents happen because we missed the signs, waited a little too long, or haven't yet shown our puppy where we want them to go. Potty training is something we teach through patience, consistency, and repetition.

Instead of focusing on the accident, focus on setting your puppy up for success. Take them out often, praise them when they get it right, and remember that every puppy learns at their own pace.

With time, patience, and positive guidance, your puppy will learn exactly what is expected of them. Patience and consistency will go a long way.

Expect the First Night to Be Different

Some puppies settle in right away, while others may cry a little during their first night away from their littermates.

This is completely normal.

The blanket included in your puppy pack carries familiar scents from home and can provide comfort during those first few nights. Keeping your puppy close by can also help them feel more secure as they adjust.

Building Trust

The most important thing during the first few days is building a bond with your puppy.

Spend time sitting on the floor, playing gently, offering treats, and letting them come to you. Every positive interaction helps build confidence and trust.

Before long, you'll find yourself followed from room to room by your own little shadow.

Enjoy Every Moment

Puppies grow up far faster than we ever expect.

Take photos, celebrate the little milestones, laugh at the silly moments, and enjoy getting to know your new best friend.

The first few days are just the beginning of a wonderful journey together, and before you know it, you won't remember life without them.

Welcome to the LuxTail family. We are excited to be part of your puppy's story.
