Why Our Puppies Are Raised With Us, Among Us
There is something very special about raising a puppy from the very beginning.
At LuxTails, our puppies aren't simply born in our home. They are raised with us, among us, and as part of our everyday family life.
For us, that's what home-raised means.
Home-Raised Can Look Different
Every responsible breeder has their own way of raising and caring for their puppies, and there isn't just one right approach.
For us, however, we believe puppies benefit from growing up surrounded by the sights, sounds, routines, and people that make up everyday family life.
They don't simply live in our home.
They live life with us.
They hear us talking. They hear the television, the kitchen, doors opening and closing, the vacuum, the laughter, and all those ordinary sounds that make up a household.
They are handled, cuddled, groomed, played with, and included in our daily routines.
And as they grow, their world gradually becomes a little bigger.
Socialization Begins Here
A puppy's world is very small when they are born. As they develop, we thoughtfully introduce new experiences appropriate for their age and stage of development.
We use Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) during the appropriate developmental period and incorporate age-appropriate handling and experiences into their daily lives.
Our goal isn't to overwhelm a puppy with stimulation.
It's to gradually introduce them to the world in a positive and thoughtful way.
As they grow, they experience normal household noises and activities, different surfaces, handling, grooming, new people, and other everyday experiences.
These things become familiar rather than frightening.
Everyday Life Is Their Classroom
We don't believe socialization needs to be complicated.
Sometimes it's simply allowing puppies to experience the ordinary things that happen around them.
The vacuum cleaner.
The dishwasher.
The television.
Someone coming through the front door.
Being picked up and handled.
Having their feet touched.
Being brushed.
Hearing different voices.
Exploring a different room.
Experiencing a new surface beneath their feet.
These are all small experiences, but they are part of the world our puppies will eventually live in.
As they become old enough and the weather and circumstances are appropriate, we also introduce them to the outdoors.
They get to explore and play in our own backyard, experiencing grass, fresh air, different textures, and the excitement of discovering a new environment.
Of course, everything is done with their age, development, safety, and health in mind.
Time With Their Mother and Littermates Matters Too
Being raised in our home doesn't mean puppies are constantly being handled or entertained.
Their mother and littermates are an important part of their development.
They learn through play, interaction, boundaries, and communication with one another.
We also give them individual attention so we can get to know their unique personalities as they develop.
One puppy may be the little adventurer.
Another may be more thoughtful and observant.
One may be especially outgoing.
Another may prefer to take a moment to investigate before joining the fun.
Getting to know those personalities is one of the most rewarding parts of raising a litter.
It also helps us understand each puppy as an individual when the time comes to match them with their family.
Grooming Is Part of Their Education Too
Yorkshire Terriers require regular grooming throughout their lives, so we want puppies to learn early that being handled is simply part of life.
We gradually introduce age-appropriate grooming experiences such as being touched on their feet, ears, face, and body, along with brushing and other gentle handling.
The goal is to make these experiences familiar and positive.
A puppy that grows up understanding that grooming and handling are normal parts of life has already had a valuable head start when they eventually visit their groomer.
We Let Their World Grow With Them
We don't believe puppies need to experience everything all at once.
Their world should expand gradually.
First, it might be the sounds and smells of our home.
Then new rooms and surfaces.
Then outdoor exploration.
Then additional experiences appropriate for their age and development.
Each stage builds on the one before it.
We want our puppies to have the opportunity to discover the world at a pace that allows them to process new experiences without becoming overwhelmed.
More Work? Absolutely.
Raising puppies this way takes time.
There is cleaning, feeding, laundry, grooming, monitoring, socialization, and plenty of puppy mess.
But there are also the moments that make it all worthwhile.
Watching a puppy experience something new.
Seeing a little personality emerge.
Watching littermates play together.
Seeing a puppy confidently explore the backyard for the first time.
Having a sleepy puppy curl up beside you after a busy day.
Those are the moments we treasure.
Why It Matters to Us
We aren't trying to produce as many puppies as possible.
We are focused on raising well-prepared Yorkshire Terriers and giving each puppy the strongest beginning we can.
For us, that means thoughtful breeding, health-conscious decisions, early neurological stimulation, age-appropriate socialization, positive experiences, and plenty of time spent simply being part of our family.
Because a puppy's first weeks aren't just about getting them ready to leave.
They're about helping them begin to understand the world they'll eventually live in.
For us, home-raised isn't just where a puppy is born. It's how they experience their first weeks of life.
They grow up with us, among us, and as part of our everyday life.
And when the time comes for them to leave LuxTails and become part of their forever family, we hope they're taking with them not only a healthy beginning, but a foundation of positive experiences, confidence, and familiarity with the world around them.
That's what home-raised means to us.
